Alan Odle (1896-1948) was an English artist and writer associated with the Surrealist movement. He was born in London and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. As a young man, he was a member of Wyndham Lewis's Vorticist group, but later became interested in Surrealism.
Odle is best known for his striking, often grotesque illustrations and book covers. His work was published in numerous magazines and books, including popular science fiction and horror titles. He also wrote several unpublished novels.
Odle struggled with mental illness for much of his life, and his health deteriorated rapidly in the 1940s. He died in 1948 at the age of 52. Despite his short career and troubled life, Odle's work continues to be admired for its originality and intensity.
